JOB SUMMARY:  Performs selected nursing, administrative and clerical duties that assist in patient care management, following established standards and practices.

72 hours per pay period

Position is open until filled.

 

EDUCATION:

Must have graduated from an accredited school for Medical Assisting

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:

Current certification for medical assistant or certificate of completion from skills obtained

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Rooming patients:

  • Obtaining vitals and record vital signs
  • Observing and recording signs and symptoms
  • Preparing patients for examination

Procedures:

  • Perform venous blood withdrawal
  • Administer non-intravenous injections
  • Assisting with patient examinations or treatments
  • Operating office medical equipment
  • Collecting routine laboratory specimens (urine, nasal pharyngeal swabs, blood)
  • Performing basic laboratory testing (Glucose, Urine Hcg, Strep Screen, SFOB, Urine dip)
  • Administering medications by unit dosage. (May administer medications from either a single or multi dose vial as long as the supervising physician assures appropriate training, competence, and assumes ultimate responsibility for administration of such drugs)
  • Transmitting prescriptions to a pharmacy pursuant to their supervising physician’s written or verbal order
  • Applying bandages/splints to extremities
  • Suprapubic catheterizations only
  •  Reporting diagnostic lab findings to patients only after appropriate interpretation by the physician
  • May perform office procedures including all general administrative duties
  • Assist patients with indigent medication program enrollment and ordering, with RN assistance when necessary

 

The medical assistant’s scope of practice does NOT include:

  • Injection of insulin
  • Arterial blood withdrawal
  •  Administration of medications which require calculation of a dose
  • Patient education. Education may be provided in pre-printed format only
  • Irrigations
  • Triage
  • Assessment of patients’ body systems
  • Offer advice
  • Count narcotics
